Newsprint Tutorial • The Nitty & The Gritty

Making The Serrated Edge

To create the serrated edge at the top of the newspaper, I chose to use a custom brush
to make the serration pattern. The picture below shows Photoshop's Brush Options
Window. Clicking in a blank area in the brushes palette will bring up this window to
create a new brush. Diameter sets the size of the brush. Hardness determines whether
the brush will have soft edges or not.Since we want it to look like sharply cut paper, the
Hardness is set to 100%. Spacing determines how far apart each brush dot will be apart
in a brush stroke. A setting of 0% would result in a continuous smooth stroke, A setting
of 150% would result in a dotted line with a small space between each brush dot. To give
us a nice serrated edge, the spacing is set to 100% so there is almost no gap between
brush dots.

Below is a sample stroke with our new brush.

Creating The Serration

The simplest way to make the serration would be to apply our new brush using the eraser tool
sett to 100% and remove the upper edge of the paper that way. To have a little more control
over the exact placement of the serration, I chose to make a new layer, and use the paintbrush
tool to apply a stroke at the upper edge of the paper. Using this method, the layer with the brush
stroke can be moved up and down using the move tool until the position of the serration is where
you want it. A selection is then made using the transparency of the layer. Switch to the paper
layer and Delete
